Occupation prior to enlistment Manager Brisbane Government Building and Banking Company Enlisted 29 November 1915 Served in France Awarded Distinguished Service Order 'For special devotion to duty and conspicuous good service during the opeations at Pozieres in July and August 1916. He was unremitting in his attention to duty during the whole time in the trenches.' Awarded Bar to DSO 'At Mont Brehain, east of Perchne, on 5th October 1918, in charge of a pioneer battalion, he succeeded in carrying out a very difficult relief in pitch darkness. A few hours after this he ably carried out a flanking movement to the attack on the town of Montbrehain, driving back the enemy and insuring a defence which proved to be unbreakable. His reconnaissance had to be carried out under heavy shell fire. He showed rare qualities of leadership.' Returned to Australia per 'Norman' July 1919

Served in France Awarded Military Medal 15th September 1919 - For Bravery in the Field 'During operations of the 26/27th August 1918 East f Bray, Private ANSELL a Company Runner carried valuable information backwards and forwards through heavy barrage and in face of enemy machine gunners and snipers throughout the whole operation. At one phase of the attack, when enemy Machine Gun fire was exceptionally heavy, Private ANSELL rushed through with urgent information from the front line which was essential for the Battalion Commander to know. His disregard of danger in carrying such information greatly assisted the Commanding Officer to keep in intimate touch with his attacking troops.' Returned to Australia 03 July 1919 per 'Prinz Hubertus'
