"The Last Post has sounded, you have laid aside your gun. Called Home"
MEACHAM, Leslie Glanville
Service No 4506 Sergeant 2nd Machine Gun Battalion
Born Barcaldine, Qld. Son of Rebecca MEACHAM Of Barcaldine, Qld. Occupation prior to enlistment Carpenter Enlisted 06 August 1915 Awarded Military Medal 'During the taking of MONT ST. QUENTIN on 1st September, 1918, these two men [MEACHAM and 2123 J.L. BRIDGLAND] were acting as No. 1 of Machine Guns and showed determination and initiative in the use of their weapons. Under intense fire from Machine Guns and Minnenwerfers, these men worked their way round to the flanks of an enemy Machine Gun nest, which was holding up our infantry and causing many casualties. They suddenly opened fire on the enemy from close range and silenced the gun, although their exposed position drew a heavy fire upon them. This operation was carried out without regard to personal danger and, by bravely sticking to their position, they enabled the infantry to reorganise the line.' Returned to Australia 31 May 1919

He led his platoon in the attack with great dash and initiative, showing high qualities of leadership. When the final objective was captured he carried out reconnaissances in front of the position, and worked untiringly to secure the position against counter attacks. When all the other officers became casualties he took command of his company and held on under severe fire until relieved.'
Awarded Bar to Military Cross 'Near Lihons, on 10th August 1918, he organized sections of various companies with marked ability, thus saving many casualties. He and another officer went forward and located a strong point which was holding up the advance, and which was at once dealt with. Next day he filled up a gap in the line, having to pass through Auger Wood, which had not been mopped up. He showed conspicuous gallantry and leadership.' Awarded 2nd Bar to Military Cross 'At Villeret on 18th September 1918, he showed brilliant leadership and great gallantry. At the second objective he advanced to the line of exploitation, thus enabling the troops on either flank of him to come up. His reports were of great value to his Commanding Officer, and on the line of exploitation being captured the defensive positions chosen showed a thorough knowledge of the tactical situation.'
