RODDA, Victor Henry
On the evening of 25 Apr 1915, the 16th Bn went ashore at Anzac Cove and made their way into the hills. They spent the night digging in along the edge under intense rifle fire. For the next five days they stayed there, holding the hill, with Turkish troops to their front and rear. Snipers, who had penetrated the nearby ridge at Russell’s Top and were at the rear of the battalion’s trenches, caused many casualties. Thomas received gunshot wounds to a leg and right shoulder on 28 Apr 1915. He was transferred by HMT Lutzow to the 15th General Hospital in Alexandria. On 26 May he was transferred to the convalescent camp, Helouan, Cairo. On 21 July 1915, he embarked on HMT Kingstonian at Alexandria and rejoined his unit at the Gallipoli Peninsula on 28 Jul.
Unfortunately, Thomas had little chance to catch up with his mates, as on 6 Aug 1915 , just 9 days later, three attacks (Lone Pine, the Nek and Chunuk Bair) were made to try and seize the peninsular. The 4th Brigade (13th, 14th, 15th & 16th Battalions) were ordered to attack and seize Hill 971. The 8th Aug proved to be a “black day” for the 4th Brigade with the 15th Bn losing over 500 men, with losses from the 14th & 16th battalions also heavy. The 16th Bn lost 118 men, including Thomas Rodgers, aged 25yrs. His parents were not notified until October 1915.
He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli and on the Roll of Honour in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
