YOUNG, Arnold David
Service Number 17542 Private 3rd Field Ambulance
Arnold David Young enlisted at the recruitment depot in Adelaide Street, Brisbane on 24th February 1917 in the 3rd Field Ambulance. He had been a Chemist Assistant in Maryborough. His father, David who ran a grain store in Kingaroy where Arnold was born in late 1895. After training at Enoggera Army Depot, he left for the Western Front on 2nd August on the H.M.A.T. Miltiades by way of the Panama Canal and Halifax. He arrived in France on 2nd November 1917 and worked in the field ambulance stations in France and Belgium till 15th March 1919. He worked in Australian military hospitals in the UK till his return to Australia on 16th August still nursing the sick on board the H.M.A.T. Ajana. He arrived in Brisbane on 11th October and was discharged on 10th November 1919 and awarded the British War and Victory Medals. He qualified as a chemist in November 1920 and worked in his own pharmacy in Coorparoo till his death in 1966.

YOUNG, James Stevenson
Service No 1849 Private 9th Battalion
James Stevenson Young was born in Kingaroy in March 1893 where his father, David, ran a grain store. His mother was Mary Young nee Stevenson and originally named as next of kin. He was nearly 21 years 10 months old and working as a Bank Clerk in Maryborough when he enlisted in Toowoomba on 6/1/1915 as a private and embarked on the Star of England on 8/4/1915 in the 4th Regiment of the 9th Infantry Battalion. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1916 while serving in France. On 20/4/1918, he was severely wounded in action with the right side of his face suffering great damage. He was repatriated to Australia in August of that year and returned to civilian life having been awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
